Democracy at Work DC (d@w-DC) is dedicated to the promotion of worker cooperatives and democratic workplaces. We believe that worker self directed enterprises are crucial to a stronger democratic economic system and a necessary alternative to the current capitalist organization of the economy where few benefit at the expense of the many. We advocate for democratic workplaces through education, advocacy, outreach and political coordination with progressive organizations committed to economic justice. We envision a future where workers at every level of their offices, stores and factories have equal say in the direction of their enterprise and its impact within their community and society at large.
Our parent organization is the national 501(c)3 non-profit Democracy at Work (d@w). Based on the book Democracy at Work: A Cure for Capitalism by Richard D. Wolff, it advocates for worker cooperatives and democratic workplaces as a key path to a stronger, democratic economic system. Democracy at Work began supporting the formation of local action groups such as d@w-DC in 2016. Now there are about two dozen groups across the US and the world.
d@w-DC is staffed by volunteers who are active in progressive movements in the Washington DC area.
